a young girl went crying into her room
over a stupid thing somebody said
they laughed at her because she was different
ironically, they were too
she grew older and taller and still they jeered
because she was unique
she blamed herself because nobody else could truly feel her grief
so one day, she asked her mom
what is it, what’s so wrong
about me that causes me to feel as if I don’t belong?
the mom closed her fingers around
her daughter’s shoulders
and felt the pain inside
When I look at you, do you know what I see?
No, the daughter replied
When I look at you, I don’t see color, gender or size
when I look at you
I see the wonderful things that you can do
I see cities raised from deserts
I see lives yet to be saved
I see worlds you will someday create
and roads that need to be paved
I see smiles on lips and joy in hearts
and songs that will one day be sung
I see sunny days and getaways
and darling, these are only some
I see a future only you can create
so who cares what they think?
for when I look at you
I see the countless things
that you will someday do
