Soldier of the Streets
January, 2016, Wichita, KS
What do you see?
You see homeless, drunks and druggies.
What do I see?
I walk these streets, I see their stories
We rely on the kindness of others. We hike the distance to eat, sleep and make our commute.
You see a woman into drugs to get high,
I see a woman struggling with her demons to forget her fears and worries.
You see hoarders,
I see people fighting to battle the elements to stay warm and dry.
You see hordes and masses at the library or a coffee shop,
I see the cold and tired, resting from their travels and trying to warm up.
They humbly bow their heads each night, praying to their God to give them the strength and courage each day to wake up and fight their own battles.
You see alcoholics in the streets,
I see people drinking their sorrows away, wishing they could die so the pain will go away.
You see people fighting over nothing,
I see them fighting for their own honor and to defend themselves because nobody else will.
You snub your nose at them because they are "beneath" you.
What you don't realize is we fight each and every day to make it through during the good and the bad weather.
I see spirits willing to hold out for that last glimmer of hope that they can be rescued from their demons and fears.
You worry about paying for your next Super Bowl party supplies,
We worry where our next meal will come from. We worry where we will lay our head at night. We worry if we will be warm at night.
You think you have worries?
Try being a soldier of the streets.
