Snowball Fight

A winter's childish heaven.

As I look I see a grey sky turning white

A cold wind blows bringing in the night

My breath starts to appear and blow for all to see

And as the sky gets cloudier still I dream of what will be.

It’s later now and all is hushed as first flakes start to fall

No human, bird or four legged beast can resist the call

To walk amongst the silent graves and leave behind a trail

And wait with almost childish joy and emotions that never fail.

The first flake falls and settles down and that leads to another

Now every child that excitement finds starts pleading to their mother

“Can I go to play please Mum, can I join my mates?”

Next with approval of their Mums it’s out and through the gates.

The snow is falling now big and bright, the evening starts to draw

Kicking through the powder of fun the kids just ask for more

“Its getting deeper!” young Paul shouts and starts to role a ball

Then when he’s hit on the back of the head, this cushion now breaks his fall.

A snowball fight now erupts with friend attacking friend

They play as the British against the Huns to bring a war to end

They play for hours in this world of joy but now its getting colder

Oh how I wish I could join in, its no fun when you’re getting older.

All the gardens now look the same as this blanket covers the ground

And as I look at this fairy tail world there is stillness all around

No cars or vans or motorbikes will chance their steely will

For no mere mortal would ever dare to challenge Constitution Hill.

The tree’s are white, the cars are white and still the snow does fall

And still the kids play in the street until their mother’s call

“Come in now it’s time for tea and its bloody freezing!”

So in they come with saddened cloths and then they start their sneezing.

I think snow is beautiful, as an old man I find it calming

Yet the way I still see people drive is really quite alarming

The world can be a wonderful place if only people could know

“It is the kindness of man that makes it beautiful, its only helped by snow”
