A Poem About Domestic Violence

This warmth around me—so familiar

Security blanket; a mothers' touch

I am a child, so fragile and naïve

Arms slither around me—deadly serpents

Voice in my mind, always in sync with yours

We've been here before; familiar paths

My mind is peaceful as I slowly die,

but I do not dare gasp for air...

I writhe my body in protest, my will

to live—restored—in my final moments

My energy depletes—my muscles weak

accepting fate; completely paralyzed

I stare off into the oblivion

—limp—as the serpent devours his prey
