Smell a Memory

a poem

consider this:

a scent holding a memory gently.

cradling it like porcelain.

it tiptoes up behind you

and tickles your nose.

then with reverence, like

it's offering you something precious,

the scent places the memory

in your palms.

"remember this?" it inquires.

you turn it over and look

at its smooth edges

and then you realize

you do remember.

suddenly you're there.

light flickers and pictures flit as

a feeling bunches in your stomach.

it's a familiar feeling and you greet

it with fondness.

the memory dances by

before returning to the scent.

who vanishes and leaves you

wondering at the memories

tangled up in smells.
