Sleepless Nights

What makes all-nighters feel so odd?

I’ve had a weird all-nighter. Or not weird at all.

It’s just that

All all-nighters are weird.

They hold a sort of empty fullness in them.

Maybe they feel like that because

They are the hours of when you’re supposed to

Sleep and switch-off.

Maybe that’s what makes them so overwhelmingly

Timeless, so comfortably eerie and

Uncomfortably soothing?

Maybe.

Maybe I’ve just cracked the code; the question that

Lingers always – the feeling of uncertainty towards

Sleepless nights; early mornings; those weird

Dark hours when birds sing and you wonder why.

These dark sleepless hours make nostalgia

Explode in my gut. It makes me sick.

And yet I enjoy and embrace every long minute

Of this darkness. Sleepless nights sometimes

Feel like medicine to me. Sometimes you need

To lose sleep, spend a whole night

Daydreaming rather than dreaming in your sleep.

Revive yourself, almost. Embrace the dark happiness.
