Sleep Sweet Child

(An Ode to My Babies)

Sleep Sweet Child,

For when you awake,

I will still be here,

I will never forsake,

A darling oh so sweet as thee,

A spirit as pure as can be.

Brushing away your sun-kissed locks,

Reveals a beautiful face,

And all the while, I sit and think,

No-one could take your place.

Such loveliness, perfection,

You are my flawless one,

You tell me, remind me,

Why I am here

And you lead me back,

When I am gone.

So dream away my little one

Of lands afar and times bygone,

In worlds that one as old as me

Could never imagine a thing to see.

Unicorns that fly, teddy bears at tea,

Diamond whales in a heliotrope sea,

An ogre who is late for school,

A rainbow cat called Mr Cool.

Or maybe you’ll ponder

Who you will be,

When you get to the age

Where you’re as old as me.

And Even when that time does come,

Forever and always, I’ll be your Mum.

So have a yawn

And breathe in deep

Then close your eyes

And take a leap,

Into the wondrous place ahead,

While you snuggle cozy

In your bed.

And rest assured

That while you play,

Inside your head,

I’ll just be lay,

Never far away from you,

Should you awake

and need me too.
