Skinny Girl Guilt

A poem on society's double standard

You're skinny, you can't complain

Any insecurities you have are invalid

Don't even think about comparing your body to any one else's

Because

That means you're fishing,

You already know you're pretty

So don't ever talk about the way

You feel,

Or the emotions behind your body

Because no one wants to hear your complaining

You need to shut up and be happy

Don't talk about the feeling you get when you look at yourself in the mirror

And want to gag

The minutes that you spend staring at your body critiquing it

Imagining the ways it would be better

The shameful feeling you get when you have to take a shower, and see your body

So, you shower with the lights off

Time spent crying

Time spent dreading summer

You're expected to be content... After all, you're skinny

No one wants to hear your complaints,

You're not allowed to complain, you're skinny.
