Sitting, Waiting...

Just a Touch of What Anxiety Feels Like

9:00 listed and scheduled

Just checked in

Asked to take a seat

Wait till they call your name they add

I have an option of two seats

One among an older gentleman coughing his throat out

Another near a new mother feeding her child

With a nervous smile I take a seat next to her as she watches me

Finally seated I take a deep breath of relief

I felt calm until I heard it

A door opens and a nurse pop out with a clipboard in hand

My heart begins to pound and this sensation rushed down my spine

All these thoughts begin to rush into my head

What will the Doctor think this time

Will I be put on some new medication again

Or are they gonna have me stop them

Are they gonna ask me to see a therapist again

Will this finally be my last visit

The nurse calls out

Mister please step this way

The older gentlemen follows and I'm to finally breathe again

Picked up an article beside me

It read how to strengthen your mental health

Annoyed at the title I slouch in my seat

Of all the great things it could've been about

Halfway through the countless paragraphs on stress and anxiety it starts

I look to my side where the new mother sits

One look at the child and I just knew what terror was about to begin

Endless tears began rushing down the child's red cheeks.

Its cry, so high pitch the receptionist hid behind her headset

I sunk lower in my seat just hoping the crying would stop

Then I heard it

The door opened once more with the nurse at its handle

I feel the sensation from earlier once more

What if they ask me once more about my sleep schedule

Will they ask about my diet

Or will it be about how I handle my decision making once more

Lost in thought I didn't even hear a name

The new mother with weeping child in arms scurries through the door

The room falls silence once more

I'm left alone

With much relief the receptionist takes off her headset returning to work

I couldn't help but silently agree with her relief

Now alone I sit up with much content and return to my article

Minutes after finishing my reading the door opens

The nurse steps out with a gentle smile

Miss we may see you now...
