Shelter

I Grew Up Behind Glass

To be a sheltered child

With carpet feet

And temper mild

To look out the glass

the barrier between here and there

And wherever, is beyond that turn.

To watch the swing of the bats,

of boys with baseball caps,

and watch the girls ride bikes

pass the sidewalks safety line.

To find your own fun

Painting on the walls

And never needing to run

To have bedrooms,

miles from the —

knock. knock. knock.

sanctuaries to hide in

when someone is there because we don't

we don't

ever open the door.

Destiny Smith

Writing is one of the few constants I've had throughout my life, and Vocal seemed like the perfect opportunity to put it all somewhere.
