Sent as Text Message

a poem

it was in the inbetween spaces

the quiet times between messages

when neither of you knew what to say next

and the dots on the screen were a tense

burst of potential energy that sometimes

would go on for hours

Or

the way your sentences would trail off

during dinner

while you nervously pushed your food

around your plate, as if moving it would

move this moment forward

Or

the way you held each other and

stared at the ceiling in winter

wondering where this would

Or could

all go

those were the moments

when the clouds washed over your week

and you felt like letting go

and you only dug your heels in

and hung on for all you had left

heartbreak
