Seasons Splendors

Little Things to Adore

My favorite chunk of time in the year is late summer to winter, you know why? It's because of all of the fun things and beautiful memories I’ve built around these times. Like in summer, our picnics on the biggest hill in the city when the sun was at its golden hour or the long road trips to see your favorite band play, where you listen to good music and stop to take pictures every five minutes. I remember driving around the city at night with all the windows down and my friends all crammed over capacity in the back of my car, our laughs echoed in the streets and I’d never been so free. I love the big bon fires you do at the end of summer. Ice cream dates where you get to sit on the roof and watch those gorgeous pink and orange sunsets. There’s so much to love about those last summer days, when it's cool at night and the sun is shuffling through the leaves in the trees. They are filled with the perfect sun for getting a tan down at the river, go tubing at the lake, BBQs and cookouts with your family and your skin always seems to smell a little tropical no matter how much you shower. The summer time is amazing but for me personally they are more than lake days and camping trips. They are blindingly wonderful summer loves, playing grounders with your friends at midnight on an old school playground, climbing up the cut banks to watch the city, playing pool and laughing at how awful everyone is at the game. It a time for memories and a time to have your head in the clouds, summer time will always hold a special place in my heart.

Even with summer's wonderful traits, autumn is and always will be my favorite season. Being so introverted autumn is very forgiving and really lets me be myself. It lets me wrap my body in warm socks and over sized sweaters and comforts me with a warm inside and out. Autumn decorates the tress with burnt orange, gold, & burgundy leaves and ripens fruits till their perfect for picking. Autumn is when the sky is a different colour every night and in the mornings the smell of rain has painted the sidewalks and streets. We spend autumn baking appley, chocolatey, cinnamony, creations as we get ready to hibernate for the harsh Canadian winter. Sweet scented candles and fires with decorated mantles warm our homes and fragile spirits because no matter how harsh the day was nothing can't be fixed by a creamy hot chocolate, thick blanket, and a Tim Burton movie. To celebrate autumn, we hang colour lanterns in the streets, fill our homes with garlands, and switch on our warm fairy lights. Autumn is spooky to some, and to others its the death of summer and they dread its arrival but I adore it. Autumn is cozy, its old scarves and boots pulled from storage with the nostalgic smell of last year still on them. It's shops and the breeze outside the bakery filled with scent cinnamon. It's cradling a cup of apple cider in your cold hands and you walk down the now quiet street while the fallen leaves crunch under your new rain boots. It's when I can draw a hot bath and read my book under a layer of bubbles with my favorite songs on repeat. Autumn brings out the make up artists with their dark shimmery pallets and the fashion icons with their burgundy sweaters and black knee highs. It brings out the writers, the artists and the musicians as we being filling the world with the content autumn inspired us to create. Autumn keeps all the grumpy people inside their homes while the creative, free spirited, and the optimistic roam the city. If I could I think I'd choose to live in autumn forever.

Autumn also brings in the next season with its beautifully frosted windows and crystalized trees. Winter has those pale blue skies and clear nights that let you see the north lights if it's cold enough. During winter I love to go out in the hot tub at night when it's snowing heavily and I can watch big clumps of snowflakes fall on my hair and eye lashes while the water keeps the cold at bay. My mum made sure Christmas was always a really special time for me so as an adult now I enjoy celebrating it. I love going for walks around the shops at this time, lights covering the streets in every colour, the store are all decorated and are playing my favorite Christmas songs. I like bringing Christmas into my home as well, I think it's a fun challenge to try and re-create displays and decorations I find on Pinterest. I like to spend my winter days baking with my mum, we blast Christmas music, have Christmas movies playing in the background, and fill the counters with cookies, chocolates, and tarts to send out as gives and to fill trays with for our many festive dinner parties we throw. I love to watch ballets year round but the nutcracker always had a special place in my heart so every year I take my boyfriend and go to the playhouse to watch it. I also get my boyfriend to drive me down to visit the streets who's houses put up elaborate light displays and near Christmas we walk down and stroll through thee light garden the city spends months setting put, it's truly magical.
