A Poem Regarding Man's Treatment of the Natural World
There was a planet and it was luscious and blue and bright. It had an ocean, vast and wide and like a fertile womb life sprang from it. There were creatures of all kinds that arose from the salty depths to cover the fruitful continent. Grazing on its pastures, swimming through its rivers and slivering across its deserts. Things followed their natural order and the oasis provided for all life.
Then something changed. A new creature arose, one that stood tall and faced the world with rich, dark eyes. This being was different, with the ability to reason and rationalize.
These creatures spread far and wide until there was not a shred of land they had not occupied. They repopulated quick and spread to huge numbers, but their thirst for more tore them asunder.
Fruits hung low simply for the pick, roots that were tasty, hearty, and thick. Seeds and nuts, all things like that could make such a being grow happy healthy and fat. However, these beings had violent wandering eyes and so turned their attention to the roamers of the land of which they snatched up gobbled and utilized.
They devised cruel ways for attaining their food, but don’t question their decisions we don’t want to sound rude. They heaped up the creatures and increased their numbers it was known that this would result in more plunders.
Let them roam outside, are you out of your mind? Let’s pack them in a room we're not trying to be kind. Said the monsters while drawing a line between them and the creatures, they thought it fat but it was fine.
Such beings drained the land of all its life, tearing down trees, polluting the skies and causing strife. They moved on to the ocean of which all beings had sprang. With their tin cans they conquered it. Huge nets trawled the sandy flaw to scoop up all those that could be served cooked or raw.
As the beings grew more intelligent their factories got larger and busier. From this the air got more viscous and quizzer. They heated their planet to such a degree that nobody could stand it not you, nor me.
The grassland's now a desert, the ocean now a lifeless ditch only the corporations that ran this are happy because now they are rich.
Rain turned to acid, the snow now lead, burning the remains of all that is dead. Everything has perished, all life now extinct. Disappeared before they had time to Blink, or even to think about the decisions they took, but we know their destruction wasn’t down to bad luck.
A new planet is forming far off in the distance where similar beings are contemplating their existence. These people sit and observe the night sky, turn their telescopes to Venus, and ask “heavens why?”
