Safety

Growing up they said a prince will save you

You just had to be patient and good

But when the time came

The tune changed

“Save yourself” “No one else will”

“Who would want to save you anyway?”

and it hurts like the knives you didn’t play with

and the papercuts you didn’t ask for

“Save yourself”

then the question I found

was who was I saving myself from?

It always felt like a fight.

Get up, go to school, go go go

Save yourself.

and some people said to ask for help

but help never helped

I gave up on help

Telling myself a prince would come fight the dragons for me

but no prince ever came

The dragons roasted everything I had

Burned my castle to the ground

and as I sat in the bones of who I was

Wondering just what saving myself would do

I realized

The world is always burning

Dragons always roar

There may not be a prince coming

But you (and me) don’t need one

We don’t need to save ourselves

Because there is nothing to save us from

That feels better

And a bit like safety.
