The first time
I heard a poem by
Rudy Francisco, I cried
This was not the first time
words not written for me had made me cry and it won’t be the last
But it was the first time
the words didn’t dance
to a beat
The first time
the words were missing
makeup and a monologue
The first time the words
weren’t from the one person
who knew me 9 months
before I knew myself
It was the first time I cried
because I felt that the words
were meant for me
and only me
Like Rudy somehow thought:
“You know who will need
to hear this one day? Solo”
The words took aim
straight to my heart
blood made of water and sweat
started to fall and I looked down
the message was a clean shot
the words left a hole
they made an impact
and from this, I learned
why he wrote them
why we write
why we do this
some words are strong enough
to move someone’s mountain
we hope that those words
will be ours
We write with the idea
that someone will need
our poems someday
They will attach their name to it
like it was crafted for them
and only them.
