An unspun lesson left unlearnt taps upon my door.
He’s dressed in rags, dressed in black, dragging bodies on the floor.
I wonder why I had to go, why I left him there before.
I wonder how he found my room
and how he’d find it even more.
His eyes are steady, hands are keeping to themselves.
His gait is heavy, hardly swaying, like the tremble of a bell.
I wonder why he chose tonight and what he’s come to tell.
I wonder how he found his way since
I left him crawling in his cell.
He holds a flower out to me, so I step into the dark.
A smile, weak but meaningful — the end before the start.
I wonder why the flower’s here, wonder of its part.
I wonder how it stayed intact
through the breaking of our heart.
