Rest

For Emma

I think I will rest.

Not like the sun rests, for the sun never rests.

There are sidewalks to warm and colors to illuminate,

People from everywhere have a whole day ahead of them to do things

which may or may not include

enjoying ripe peaches or strumming the strings of instruments

or the strings of other people

to make space sing

and the sun needs to be there for all of that.

So the sun does not rest.

The moon also never rests

even though people think she does.

she’s my favorite wallflower and we hang out together at parties.

anyway,

The moon doesn’t sleep,

But I need to sleep,

so I read about the footprints on the moon.

and I have a lot to do:

mysteries to solve, a heart to x-ray,

and dreams to let live, and age, and die.

But I don’t have to put footprints on the moon.

One less thing.

I think I will rest.
