Reminder: Love Yourself
A Poem Written in the Throng of Self-Love
We are taught to despise,
to criminalize
our thoughts of self-appreciation.
To idolize another form
and warm to self-deprecation.
'I hate myself'
'I want to die'
all terms we've grown so fond
I ask you now to think of why
you're the ugly duckling in the pond.
And not a beautiful butterfly
you can be if you please
forget your notions of beauty and tease
yourself into realising your worth.
Because you are worth something
Everything!
To this world which holds you dear
don't look at people 'greater' than you
and be jealous,
don't sneer.
Everyone has an insecurity
something they're bound to hide
and I'm asking you to bring it out
to sing and dance and shout!
Because I don't like my thighs
how they wiggle and cry
whenever the weather turns hot
I despise my ovaries you see
they don't work properly
pretending to be something they're not.
And my hips well
don't get me started on them
those beauties are best forgot.
But I get by
I may let out a sigh
or two
or three
when I see my reflection stare back at me
although I recognize my flaws
I see the beauty pour
from my smile, my positivity.
Because we don't need to be negative you see
not when it comes to yourself
you're trapped in this body
it gets you through life
don't put your mind through pain and strife
don't ever think you're not good enough
You are to me, to us, to we
who must share this planet of wanderers.
Just know that you are worth so much more
then your mind gives you credit for.
