Remember

I wrote this piece for Remembrance Day 2016. Despite my pacifistic followings, respect must be shown.

As hard as I try, I cannot forget

The harshness of blood and the bitterness of sweat

The ashy demise, so many have faced

The shrapnel of time, humanity’s disgrace

From Khan, to Pot, Hitler, Hussein

We’re all, in some way, touched by war’s cruel game

Touched not with a feather but a hammer and sickle

Cursed to live in this despicable fickle

We are tortured this day by a war, not so great

Dragged to face evil, of the imperial states

Barely men to the middle aged, they were forced to fight

Uncle Sam NEEDED you, under nobody’s delight

Blazed with bullets, blood and bombs, the world took a stand

A reprimand of the war that panned, with alliances in hand

Time to battle, time to rise and restore our peaceful rights

Time to decimate, obliterate, exterminate this heinous, worldly blight

Now to the battlefields, with trenches, tanks and bombs

Plagued by distant memories of a few pints and family songs

You long to have this, yet again, but nothing can be sure

Engine roars and piercing scores, show the chances poor

You question what, why and how

But you can’t give up anytime now

Think of your children and your wife

Restore our right to life

Pressured to pulverise and struggling to survive

Overwhelmed by the explosions of fracturing cries

Frozen in battle, a gun to your head

The moment they killed you, your family was dead

They had a truce, just for one week

For festivities, enjoyment, to play and to speak

But as sweet as it sounds, it was all soon done

And back to the bloodshed, with the raising of guns

This proves an unwillingness, no true desire to maim

For no barbarian would ever stop for a game

A unification call, humanity’s instinct

To take a moment before wounding, a chance to think

Lennon imagined but it’s time to create

A world filled with passion, no violence or hate

We must ensure freedom and serenity for life

Ignore the seduction of eternal strife

Never forget all who fall, in the siren song of war

The pain, the loss, the trauma and hurt, not knowing what it’s for

Remember life and all its worth, to ensure eternal love

Do it from the good of your heart and not to please above
