Preserve the Hearts

A Poem

Go if you want too.

I’ll be right here,

Go if you have to.

I’ll always be near,

Go if you need to.

You’ve nothing to fear.

I’m staying,

I’m staying put.

You know I’m right here

If something gives you the boot.

Oh, I know, honey.

It can send you flying,

And we don’t understand it,

Don’t know how to handle it.

I could write for hours,

I could crumple towers

With my cynical powers

But I’m not gonna do that

Because enough damage has been done to hearts.

It’s our job to preserve them.

Not in glass jars, I’m talking about inside us.

Because no matter what our brains say, our hearts will always shout.

It’s impossible not to hear them if you listen,

Even if you don’t you’ll feel them burst through.

Like leakage, no, something more attractive than a pipe.

I should say the rain from a desert sky—

Let’s not let our hearts run dry.
