She was young and innocent,
Excited for the next step in her life.
High school.
It’s a new building, new surroundings,
Little did she know there was a poison lurking.
“He messaged me!” would soon turn into
“He likes me!” whispers going excitedly to her bestie.
Messaging turned to texting, texting turned to hanging,
She didn’t see the signs, the warnings.
They were there all along, but love blinded her.
He was a junior, an older man interested.
He gave her a love to believe in.
The first four months were perfect, everything a girl could want.
Those months would end up being nothing but a blunt
Force trauma into her memories.
But the dates were great, the laughter was full,
She had it made.
A horrible tragedy brought the end of the year,
Leaving her love a shell of a man.
Something she should have known to fear.
She tried to be consoling, not just for him
But for the family.
“I’m so sorry for your loss” with a hug warm with love.
“I’m always here for you” the words that were meant to be comforting,
turned into the final nails in the coffin.
She was sealing her fate, without even realizing.
The New Year is supposed to mean a new you,
But she had lost herself as he secluded her.
Leaving her nothing but her thoughts to go through.
The madness was settling, she wasn’t herself anymore.
It was all a facade in front of her friends though,
They couldn’t know what was actually happening.
She couldn’t burden them with her own troubles
And his insecurities.
So she’d smile when they’d ask how things were,
Knowing he’d be behind her watching.
Always watching, there was no cure.
Valentines day came and went, leaving a scar.
Along with the day she was in the hospital,
Getting a stitch in her wrist,
How did she let things get this far?
But he loved her though,
He repeated it daily.
She’d have to say it back too, or the smiling would turn
To yelling.
So much yelling.
She couldn’t fall asleep during the talks,
Or there’d be yelling.
She couldn’t choose her friends over him,
Or there’d be yelling.
She couldn’t wear anything that revealed skin,
Or there’d be yelling.
The yelling included blaming, included cursing,
Why did he have to be so controlling?
Everything was so good in the beginning.
Her parents stepped in,
Once she finally told them how bad it had gotten.
She threw her phone across the room during a fight,
So there was no denying. No more faking.
The tears started rolling, the pain of the past nine months closing
In on her, the fear and sadness taking over.
But her parents were there for her, they made her stronger.
She broke it off the next day, sending a message that she
Couldn’t do this anymore, not knowing what else to say.
He replied. Over and over again.
She had to change her number, had to block him.
The love had died, along with her trust in people.
But she started to get back to who she was,
Her friends and family healing her with love.
She would see him in passing that next year,
But she didn’t turn her head in fear.
Rather she’d make sure he saw her happy and succeeding,
Laughing and living.
To this day she still feels some suspicions,
Some wary feelings that will never leave.
So just remember that raising your voice
might startle her,
And apologies are how she will commonly answer.
But also remember that she survived a toxic relationship,
A coexistence with a cold poison that stayed on her lips.
But as she got older, she became stronger,
Leaving the shell, the pain, everything
Behind her.
You are nothing but a faint memory to her now,
And I promise if you treat another woman as you did her,
Karma will leave you wondering how
To suck out the same poison you bit into them,
From yourself, your heart and your spirit.
