Pity

A Poem

And so

We end up alone.

A Pity

We’re all so desperate to be understood,

We forget to be understanding.

“Are you listening?” she says

Not with her words but her gaze

The way she stares

How her eyes are searching

Unperturbed, unfazed

“Are you listening?”

We all so want to be heard,

We forget what it is to hear.

“Listen to me!” he shouts

Not with his words but his actions

How he draws attention

The way he pouts

Immature, Unrelenting

“Listen to me!”

We’re all so obsessed with knowing,

We forget how to be known.

“We know!” we sigh

No with our words but our attitudes

Thinking we’re clever

Not realizing

We are very much alone

“We know!”

We’re all so desperate to be understood,

We forget to be understanding.

We all so want to be heard,

We forget what it is to hear.

We’re all so obsessed with knowing,

We forget how to be known.

And so

We end up alone.

A pity.

About the Creator

Samantha De Yarman

They’re just words

I’m arranging in an order

And yet somehow

Nothing else is harder.
