How do I read the words on the page?
When I'm worried about your response.
When I care about the intake of breath or the laughter, the snaps of approval that I decide mean that I'm worth something.
How do I turn my pain, my hopes, my ambitions into something you'll understand?
Even though I've practiced in the mirror more times than I can count on my hands, or in my heart
There's always the fear
The hope that it'll mean something
The dream that maybe you'll resonate with the words that I weave through the air
Like a musician that makes the strings do their bidding
Like the painter that births emotions on a canvas
How do I show you my heart and not expect you to leave?
Like my parents did
Like my friends who became like family
The lovers that reduced themselves to strangers
How do I show you that you mean so much more to me
When you walk away
Cause that's what's best for you
But not for me
How do I pour my thoughts into the wind for you to pick up like petals that have blown away from their home
From their stance as beautiful
From their meaning as a whole
How do I care if you don't
I don't
And that hurts me more than your rejection
