Small Towns

there were boys in the park eating fungus

there were girls in the bathroom drinking pink champagne

i don’t know, i don’t know where we were going

or where it was from that we came?

there were tongues in mouths that pushed words past dry lips

with meanings like mazes we got lost in

for hours we talked,

for hours we walked these tiny, sleepy streets

and when this infinitesimal town fell asleep

we both bid it goodnight, sleep tight

wished it to wake as a city, please

wake up colossal, with lights

because amidst all those bodies rushing, no one has time to care

what you’re doing or where you’re going or why you’re headed there

and so we laughed at ourselves, so restless

because nothing here will ever change

the people, they could wear different faces

but they’ll always be labeled the same

what a shame.
