Outside of the Box

An Encounter

She said

"I'll meet you next to the box and we can try to think outside it.

Lord knows I'm afraid.

I've got doubts.

Every swamp that I've crawled out of was full

of women and men,

significant others,

sisters and brothers,

and rarely exposed

pieces of myself.

Romance is dead because everyone's too literal,

mystique is a memory,

and I'm just as confused as you are."

She said

"I'll meet you outside of the box and we can crawl inside it just for tonight,

just for the warmth,

just for one night."

I said

"The box is gone.

The narrative's broken and people are hurting.

The swamp is as full as it ever was.

Nothing seems better, alone or together, but at least if we're together then at least we're together

just for tonight,

just for the warmth,

just for one night.

The box is gone."
