Our Bodies Know the Answer

A Poem

A small bundle of wildflowers were cradled in her arms. I watched her as she got off the bus,

my heart stealing

away to whatever moment those flowers were meant for.

I breathed deeply as I passed the church gardens,

a momentary double-shot of nature and religion.

It would have to do.

I told you, last night, that in another life

I would have had your child.

These days, we take romance in shots.

Will a day come when we can no longer make room for love?

We gulp it down,

because our bodies know the answer

to that question.
