Only A Dream

A Dream Adventure

I dreamed I was lost on a steep hillside, a little white dog was by my side. We had wandered off for days, lost and alone, Not the slightest idea which way was home.

The ground was covered with ice and sleet, It was all we could do to stay on our feet, but at least we came to level ground, I rubbed my eyes and looked around.

A team and wagon was standing there as though waiting to take someone, somewhere, just then, somewhere from out of the blue my sister Gladys came into my view. She said, climb in and give them the line they will get us home in plenty of time. So we clambered in, Said Getty up go so away they went, through the binding snow.

But it wasn't our home that they took us to, a ramshackle shack came into view. They headed straight for the ban on the run, we couldn't stop those sons of a gun.

From the house came a man, with a big shotgun, We jumped from the wagon and started to run. Seemed the weather had changed, it was hotter than heck, we were dripping with sweat from our feet to our neck.

Then we came to a river, covered with ice, we skated across, that part was nice. On the other side was a sea of mud, We mired to our knees and couldn't budge.

Then above us, hovering low, was something that looked like a UFO, Something picked us up, twas a man I supposed, though he had a sharp chin and a beak for a nose.

He pulled a switch, then a blinding light, Soon the earth below us, sank from our sight, we flew to the moon, then Venus and Mars, They sailed away midst the glittering stars.

Then back towards Earth, with the speed of light, Soon the USA came into sight, We shouted with joy as we neared came, For surely we'd be home again.

But he kept on flying around the Earth, soon they were over the land of our birth, The Ozark Mountains in old Missou. Could it be our old home now coming into view?

Our parents we'd lost, many years ago, were waiting for us by the cottage door, All our brothers and sisters, but how can this be? Among them, I see sister Gladys and me.

Then we asked the pilot to let us out, but he laughed like a friend, as he turned about.

We started to cry, No hope could we see, Then that thing came down onto of a tree, Then he put us out, guess he did his best, For he landed us safe, in an eagle's nest.

Then mama eagle flew over the hill, If she hadn't found us, we'd be there still, But if she didn't like our looks, I guess for she bit and clawed us half to death.

Then she threw us down to the old cold hard ground, I awoke with a start and glanced around. My sister was gone, the visions had fled. And I was at home, all safe in my bed.

Yes twas only a dream, a bad one, you say? But I'd gladly dream it again someday, For that vision of home, recompensed all the rest, Even our fall from the eagle nest.
