Once I took a long walk on a winding dirt road,
sirrah, sirrah,
just to see what the world did hold,
sirrah, sirrah,
I saw sweet lilies, daffodils, tulips, azalea, and posies,
sirrah, sirrah,
I thought that I had found heaven in a field of sugar roses.
I heard the sound of music in the distance,
yes I did, oh yes I did,
I simply could not forbear to pause and listen,
yes I did, oh yes I did,
an hour felt a day, a day as a whole weak,
yes it did, oh yes it did,
as I stood so still inside this heaven of which I speak.
I saw a gentle lady in the sapphire haze ahead;
oh I may of, oh I might of,
I chose to arouse from my sleep instead;
oh I may of, oh I might of,
I commenced to walk, I longed to talk;
oh I may of, oh I might of,
as that field of roses I did cross.
I soon beheld sweet glory in her eyes;
oh the sun did sigh, the mood did gasp,
My poor soul felt as the eagle flies;
the sun did sigh, the moon did gasp,
whence she walks, or whence she goes,
the sun did sigh, the moon did gasp,
I just follow blindly along, I suppose.
I say that the God Of Heaven hath smiled upon me;
Ah, he did, yes he did!
That he so blessed me with joy filled surroundings and company;
Ah, he did, yes he did!
I can walk in gracious company amid the enrapturing sound as the creek flows;
Oh yes I can, oh yes I can!
Where the spring wind shall carry me, no body knows!
