On Me

They Love to Say

Eyes cleaving flesh

the supple shape of my pride

How you see me if I show it off

How you see me if I don't

The curve of a sigh,

the beholder of breath

It is the only thing I consistently

venerate

It is my grandmother's gift

It is coincidence

and connection

the supple shape of my pride

is like thighs and lips

like a tongue saying "L"

Caught between teeth

A bird in the hand

Beating wings

Thin skin eclipse

Symmetry

like the moon it pulls

it is mine alone

Bite your bottom lip

and try to speak

My pride is two syllables

and a tumble over the tongue

They love to say
