Ode to Anyone Falling in Love

A Poem

We breathe the same air

and you want to bottle it.

If you could hold

everything I am

you would welcome me with open arms,

but

I am as heavy as a secret

Or the waves in a storm.

Constantly pushing you away

and dragging you under

at the same time,

you just keep trying

to swim.

Do not make excuses

for the bitter taste I leave in your mouth.

I am not an

acquired taste.

I am not a last meal.

Do not make me

your silver lining.

Should I apologize

for pumping the blood through

your heart, invading places

I do not belong?

For making a home

between your ribs

that can be so easily broken?

My cold hands

cannot keep you warm

and the fire beneath

my feet, will only burn you.

We are not made from the same

Earth.

I am as heavy as a secret

pulling you down,

burying you in promises

I never intended to keep.

So I am begging you

do not make me

your home.
