Notched Heart

Lost Love

There's three notches in my heart

Of past loves that have died.

One I cried over for months

Frantically trying to keep it alive

Not knowing what I'd do without it.

Another burned like wildfire.

Full of adolescent defiance,

planted in the hearts of children

Too young to know how to handle it.

The most recent,

Was a bloodstained white picket fence

For feelings can't be forced

And some hearts cannot be tamed.

Your name has yet to claim a notch

And I sincerely hope it won't

Take my heart, scarred and healed

Beaten, but not broken

heartbreak
