Not Who We Are

Connections

Some creatures

Come into this world prepared

They are ready to survive

Instinctively knowing what to do

They handle life

On their own

All alone

That is not who we are

We come into this world

Calling out for connection

Yelling, screaming, crying out

For connection

We are cold and we seek heat

The warmth of being touched

We are hungry and we don't know

Where the food is

To nourish our body

We are uncomfortable

With the mess, we have made

We don't know how

To clean it up

Yelling, screaming, crying out

For connection

We need connection

Our survival depends on connection

Then we separate ourselves

By gender

By race, culture, ethnicity, class

Economically

Socially

Politically

We form our own group

Clicks

Tribes

Gangs

Alliance

They are like us

We huddle together

To protect ourselves

From those who are unlike us

By separation

We pull apart the very core

Of our security

With our insecurity

Mistrust

Suspicion

We turn on each other

Because of the irrational fears

Which have been planted

Deep in our heads and hearts

We have to do to them

Before they do to us

This is not who we are

Or this is not who we

Were meant to be

We come into this world

Calling out for connection

So...

Why do we separate ourselves

And kill each other?

We were made from love

Love never fails

But we fail

Every time

We don't love
