"Normal: The Generation of People Who Want To Die"

By L. Stone

Call me crazy, say I'm wrong,

Because people are going judge like they have all along,

But I believe we live in a society that's normalized apathy.

They feed us pills to keep us in a self-contained psychopathy

When it all gets to be too much,

The doctor signs his name—

Tells you to take 2 in the evening

So that you don't have to feel pain.

So that you can be

What they deem to be

'Normal' again

Even if it means you have to be sick and tired and when

You feel like the burden is too tough

You reach out to a computer screen

Because you just want to feel real love.

And we measure love in likes and texts

Word bubbles on the screen

And when they don't reply

It's onto the next.

But you see the problem doesn't lay in our brain chemistry

We live in a society filled with basic needs met with inadequacy.

To feel something is what makes us human,

And god I'd rather feel something than nothing,

Even anxiety looming, a sense of doom, man—

Than to be an android

Thumbed over and destroyed

Taken advantage of by a pharmaceutical void.

And here, I'm just trying to be real,

But maybe I can say something that's just going to make you feel

Because part of life isn't just the good,

It's that essence of being human,

To keep going even when you don't know if you should.

It makes sense why you feel sad,

The way we've normalized talking to ourselves makes us feel real bad,

We joke around saying "life sucks,"

We minimize it and say, "yeah, but no one gives a fuck."

As if we never had a voice or a choice

Or a say what goes on in our heads,

Let the marketers decide for us,

And we're better off dead.

I'm not telling you how to feel,

But it's up to you to decide what's real.

To live or to die,

That is the question,

But there's just one more thing that I forgot to mention.

If you let someone else talk to you

The way you talk to yourself,

I know you'd rather be around anyone else.

Not around the person who makes you want to hide,

And maybe that's why we live in a generation of people

That just want to die.
