Needles

Don't Get Pricked

I was with a large man,

a vegetarian activist--

scribbling madly in a notebook,

he referred to human infants as

"Useless eaters."

"What else would you call them?" he inquired.

And then two blonde women with butch cuts come

wading up the stream,

which is a deep gouge-like surgical scar through

the green,

overgrown brush.

And they have sacks full of grain

and I explain: That--

"Dogs

(And suddenly, a huge black mastiff is there

growing out of the weeds),

"DO NOT eat such things. But prefer a more delectable, savory type of feed."

And they're just traveling on foot through

the murk of the tarn to

"Feed the animals."

And I tell them they should watch out

for used needles, dropped by junkies--

and other medical refuse.
