Nana's Fairies

"We are Nana’s fairies!" their sweet and happy voices chime, they sing and dance so beautifully, the music so sublime.

Under the apple tree and through the leafy hedge,

Over the rickety fences and under the window ledge,

There resides a family of fairies within a lilac bush -

Please watch your footing and make sure you shush!

Do not disturb the fairies as they flit through the trees,

Nor as they mend their homes or help protect the bees,

Just watch them from a distance and send them a smile,

Leave reality behind and escape to nature for a while.

They’re busy in the early hours as the morning breaks,

As they gather lovely ingredients for their fairy cakes.

A twist of thyme, bluebells, and some leaves, too—

To help the cakes rise, they add a single drop of dew.

As of yet, I haven’t seen a fairy, but Nana told me so,

That she saw one in December, the lawn covered in snow.

The fairy looked cold, so she made a thimble of hot tea,

And afterwards, she flew away, back to the apple tree.

The fairies come and visit Nana when she’s in bed at night,

She looks through the window, and sees their sparkly light,

They knock gently upon the glass with a tiny rat-a-tat-tat,

And then they all fly together into Nana’s warm, cozy flat.

‘We are Nana’s fairies!’ Their sweet and happy voices chime,

They sing and dance so beautifully, the music so sublime.

Waving their magic wands, everything sparkles and shimmers,

And from outside on the street, Nana’s window glimmers.

Eating tea and biscuits, they watch television together,

Listening to the news and the latest about the weather.

Sitting on the windowsill, the fairies read poetry, too,

Talking of their favorite flowers, purple, pink, and blue.

Under the apple tree and through the leafy hedge,

Over the rickety fences and under the window ledge,

The fairies flutter off home, until the following night,

As the darkness melts away into the morning light.
