My Thoughts on Being a Racist?

Can you have racist thoughts and not even be aware?

As I sip my morning coffee... Stop falling for the Willie Bobo. There's a saying black people can't be racist. Unfortunately, I am a black person who makes racist comments, which has shown me I have been a Racist unknowingly. Since now we want to teach racist behavior in the workplace is this another fucken distraction.

I grew up in a Christian home, so I was always taught Love without conditions. However, over the years I have made comments when now looking upon them, they were not nice. They were filled with stereotypes, judgments and opinions.

Even when making friends, and the famous comment people make, when they don’t want to be labeled. Oh yes, “I have a white friend…” I know when I hear a white person say that about having or knowing black people, I feel a kind a way, so what makes my comment any better or different.

Black folks always say that they do not hold power, which is the reason why they can’t be racist, but is that entirely true? People of all cultures are able to make hiring decisions, relationship decisions, where one lives all based on what other cultures will be in their day to day life. Is that right?

I believe the feeling that we think we can justify our stereotypes is another distraction to keep people and cultures separated

But where does that come from?

Is this another example of repeat behavior from generation to generation

when you're young you don't really question the things you hear in your household, so you end up repeating them as an adult, and then without knowing, teaching your children the same thing, and then the cycle continues to repeat itself

I remember last summer I started working on a production company with the director who was white, and we were becoming friends, and every time we were out working I would make a white reference not thinking anything of it, but it became annoying to my friend, because everything that we talked about, and everything we did became something for me to say:

“oh you do this, oh you see what I mean…”

It got to a point when my friend said to me “you actually sound more racist than The white friends I'm around…” and I sat back in offense, “what do you mean, how can I be racist…” but again, subliminally I would make constant comments like:

“white people don't get cold,” and, when looking back,

it's NOT funny

it's not even accurate

but because you say it with such confidence, or with such authority, it trickles down where one might look at that as fact

when white folks looked at black people as cattle

if that's all I know from childhood that black people are property, even though it may not feel right, who I am as a child to question what I am being taught by the elders around me

So when we do get to a point of clarity

as I have now gotten in my forties

what do we do with that?

how do we embrace our thinking so that we can be part of this human community

what I realize is that race is an illusion

all that divides us or separates us

is our different cultures we all share?

but we all have the same color blood we all bleed the same

we all share pain and we all share happiness when good things are going on

we all love our families and we all want a better life for our self

isn't that what connecting us?

that we are basically just humans living a physical bein

I am sure there are many of us that are full of righteous thoughts and our behavior or snide comments or views can be or have been inappropriate until someone in LOVE brings it to our attention and then we could look at ourselves and then move, change appropriately for the benefit of our human experience here on Earth.
