My Pet Monster
The Monster Under the Bed
They say monsters
Are evil.
They harm you
And take you to bad places.
I think they lie.
There’s a monster
Under my bed -
He’s really nice.
He’s reads me stories
And tells me jokes.
He’s my friend!
He tells me of his home
A lovely place
With lovely people.
I wonder why he didn’t stay,
But he’s going home
Tomorrow.
I’ll miss my friend.
I’ll miss his big eyes
They were different -
One had a weird line
Through it.
I’ll miss the weird
Eye spikes he had.
He would put marshmallows
On the ends,
Making me laugh.
He would always grumble
About the mess left,
Covering the scales,
And a bit of his fur.
I’ll miss his smile.
It reminded me of
The Cheshire cat.
He had large teeth,
And they were sharp,
And they always had weird stains on them,
But he never told me what they were from.
I trusted him -
He was my friend,
My only friend,
And I’d miss him dearly.
He was to leave
In only a few hours
When he made his offer.
He’d take me home
With him.
He said he’d miss me too much,
Otherwise.
When the time came,
He started crawling farther
Under my bed,
And smiled brightly at me.
I started following him,
Laughing as he cracked a joke.
It wasn’t until I heard a scream
That I knew something was wrong.
My mom dragged me
From under the bed.
And hit my friend,
Still screaming.
She told me later,
That it was for my protection
That she did what she did.
As time went,
I forgot about my friend,
But I could swear -
Every now and then -
That there was someone
Watching me.
