My Lily

A Poem by Severus Snape

Green eyes stare into black,

But the gleam I once saw is gone.

The slight glow of mischief among our friendship

Has faded, and suddenly, I don't recognize you.

Your eyes glow for him, I've seen it before,

As childish pranks have turned to love.

He's no longer pulling at your pigtails,

But wooing you with spells I can't begin to comprehend.

I watched you as you grew from childhood hatred

To a love that you can no longer deny;

And I know that it's only a matter of time

That you leave my company for his.

All of our years together mean nothing,

As you mean more to me than I to you.

We're no longer those young children we once were,

Needing protection from hatred and neglect.

I should have known it would end this way,

When I wear silver and you red.

I knew it from the start, but still, I hoped

We wouldn't come to this end.

The more I try to keep you near,

The more you leave my side.

A girl like you could never love me,

No matter how hard I tried.

So if this is the end, just know

How important you were to me,

And how, for once, you made me see

Gold instead of green.

I'll love you always, even if

Your love is unrequited to me.

Even when my greatest enemy won your heart,

And I'm left alone in the dust.

So goodbye my friend, my only friend.

The one who saved my life.

The one who I must now release

To a life of love with him. Goodbye.
