My Body’s a Temple

A Poem

They say your body’s a temple you must keep it clean,

but no temple has seen the things I have seen.

Nor has it heard the things I have heard,

if it did it would most likely listen to the society's words.

The world tries to break you like an egg to crack,

but no yoke comes out cause you’re holding it back.

The outside is hard and fragile at times,

the insides best but that’s for them to decide.

If a temple were to see the things I have seen,

It would wish for a friend's shoulder to lean.

If a temple were to hear the things that I hear,

it also would feel threatened when looking in a mirror.

If something is so beautiful and sacred inside,

why must there be rules to see its insides.

If my body is this that hides its insides,

then no wonder I feel so forced to hide.

A temple is built from stone, brick, and wood,

but if not covered by paint they won’t think it looks as good.

If my body’s a temple why must it be pure,

if that temple was me it might be too much for it to endure.

People stare at a temple and bask in its grace,

but sometimes my temple isn’t their taste.

They expect you to choose right between wrong,

I wish they would understand the list is too long.

I’m not a temple nor am I a church,

because to find my true beauty you must be willing to search.

They haven’t heard the things I have heard,

If they did they also wouldn’t believe the words told to them are absurd.

They would form like clay to society’s hands,

but what do I know I’m not pure or the most beautiful building in a land.
