Mother Says

A Poem

Another day at school and I am ready to retreat

As the bell rings, I grab my things and head on down the street

I stop by a soda shop nearby and get myself a pop

I make my way outside, I see a bench and pop a squat

I look upon a sea of students, Caucasian, dressed real good

I’d sit with them but I don't make friends, though mother says I should

Could take a risk, could make a friend, and mother says to talk to them

A little down the road I see these two girls walk my way

Eyes glued on them and step by step the stares of students say

Look at their skin, they're not the same, we’re white, the better race

If it were up to them they'd wipe them all off the worlds face

but as for me I'm not the same, its true, I don't agree

While other students judge, color has no real weight on me

No really, I don’t care if someones brown, yellow, or black

If someone told my mother that she’d have a heart attack

But as these two girls walk, hoping just to get home safe

They feel the stares and hear the whispers, insecure, at any rate

I cant help but to think maybe the 3 of us can all relate

After all it must be lonely not many friends and so much hate

Well maybe I can change that, bridge the gap, stop them, say hey

But what about my classmates, what would my mother say

Could take a risk, could make a friend, but mother said don't talk to them
