Modern Apathy

Indifference is the new black.

We lack interest in, concern in,

And sympathy for others.

Where blood once had flowed,

Selfishness now runs through our veins.

You are what you do—

And the way you shrug your

Shoulders at

Those who hurt,

those who lose,

those who are angry,

those who are hungry,

And those who are alone,

Tells me that you are

In need of some loving.

Who shrugged at you

When You were hurt?

When you lost?

When you were angry?

When you were hungry?

And when you were alone?

The problem is,

We are all afraid of

The same thing

We are scared to be hurt by someone else,

scared of vulnerability.

So you choose not to get emotionally invested.

In order to protect your heart

You choose to hurt first.

Humankind will only be set free

From this unmerciful game of cat and mouse

Once we learn how to truly understand

And care for one another.
