Midnight

"When the mind won't stop wandering"

It’s 12 o’clock

and you’re lying in bed,

staring at the ceiling, the only light in the room being those

glow in the dark stars you used to have as a kid,

pasted to your window,

trying their hardest to keep the darkness at bay.

It’s 12 o’clock,

and your mind is racing

way faster than Paul Walker and Vin Diesel,

zooming their way through the streets

A million thoughts endlessly caught mid-drift

they come dangerously close to crashing together.

It’s 12 o’clock,

and you’re wondering how the transmission of life,

in its ever-shifting state has shifted to this exact moment,

where you stop wondering what will happen tomorrow,

and shift the gears to avoid what you see in the windshield

when past and present collide,

and the future doesn’t seem as far away as it once was.

It’s 12 o’clock…

You feel like you understand;

How the world works,

how to get everything you want out of life,

and how David Blaine really does street magic.

And you’ve figured out everything;

The secrets of the universe,

how Sesame Street has been on TV for over 40 years,

how to make yourself fall asleep and stay awake,

and how to responsibly binge watch Netflix,

which we all know is the most important thing in life, hallelujah.

It’s 12:01,

The rush of anxiety having been calmed by the lullaby

created from surviving the darkest of nights,

and you sleep comfortably,

knowing that you’ve got life figured out…

At least until tomorrow night.
