Melancholy

A Poem about Conquering Mental Illness

And so it came, a dark abyss within the sky.

Swallowing us whole with absolutely no mercy.

Shadowing over us with a demanding presence.

It speaks no logic, it does not rationalize.

It started off as a small dark hole and it grew and grew until it affected the whole world.

If negativity were an object, this would be it.

Thus began the revolution.

A strong headed stubborn species does not lay to rest without a fight.

Nothing will ever be the same again.

It spread like a cancer.

No one knew it was coming.

The world came to a halt.

The weak and defeated were taken first.

They could not fight back, they could not be protected.

So we sat and watched them tear our loved ones from our fingertips.

We pushed our grief and anger into the world as we stood and raised our fists.

The rebellion was upon us.

And there was no going back.

It was more than clear that the world wasn't ours.

It was never ours.

It never would be ours.

When the darkness was released things felt hopeless at first.

But humans we are and human intelligence is often underestimated.

So the weak were taken and we grieved.

But the strong became stronger.

Driven by emotion.

Emotion is our power.

Light always defeats darkness.

We always knew as a species that emotion is powerful, but emotion cannot possess you.

You can't think rationally when emotional.

And we knew that.

But of course the emotion would still be there in the end that emotion is what pushed us to fight.

So we live coincide with our emotions.

We don't let it rule us.

But we don't ignore it anymore either.

Everyday was like waking up in a black hole.

Silence. Solid black.

We didn't know if things would ever go back to normal.

But we kept fighting.

Because you always have to fight for what matters to you.

The minute you stop fighting for what you love, you have lost the battle.

The war cry that you have fought so hard to learn becomes useless.

And so you fall back into the hole and it may just take you once and for all.

Sometimes it was hard to go on with our days when we were surrounded by the darkness that corrupted our souls.

Eating became difficult, living became difficult.

But that didn't stop us.

We fought.

We always fight.

Once in a while a light would break through the darkness and give us hope.

We would gaze at it lovingly, trying to soak as much of it up as possible.

But it wouldn't be long before the darkness crept back.

Hope would be ripped away from us in a heartbeat.

But it was okay.

Because we are human, and we are strong and we have emotion and that emotion helps us get through the day.

We are human.

We are human.

So we used this beautiful thing we call human intellect and we put together this giant jigsaw puzzle and it took years.

Far too many years.

But we took it one piece at a time until we finally had a full picture.

A picture of a beautiful world filled with light and love and happiness.

And the darkness was eradicated.

We moved forth with our lives and our emotions shone like bright stars.

Once in a while it would come back, but we knew we could fight it because we had fought it before and we knew we were stronger than it.

And we conquered it every. Single. Time.

And so it came, the light at the end of the tunnel.

Swallowing us whole with nothing but mercy and love and acceptance.

Shining over us with a demanding presence.

It speaks no logic, it does not rationalize.

It started off as a small dark hole and it grew and grew until it affected the whole world.

If positivity was an object this would be it.

Thus began a peaceful life.

A strong headed species does not lay to rest without a fight.

Nothing will ever be the same again.

It spread like a ray of light.

No one knew it was coming.

But the world continued on.

The weak were swarmed with love.

They began to fight back, they were protected.

So we sat and watched the love spread, oozing from our fingertips.

We brought our positive emotions to the front of our minds and we became better people.

The rebellion was finally over.

And there was no going back.

The beginning, never the end.
