May I Feel as He Did
A Poem Inspired by Death
I felt as he did,
Broken,
Silent in the room,
My hands laid in my lap,
My eyes down,
Staring into nothing,
Everything,
It was like a minute had passed,
And not some thirty years.
Only that whisper in the wind,
A slight passing.
She wept,
Her father,
Once that strong man,
Holding her up in his arms,
Now sat there,
Frail,
His eyes drawn back into their socket,
Age,
A silent killer.
She heard him sigh,
A hard breath,
Slowly trying to speak,
Last words,
She feared.
He stumbled,
A few lines,
"I love you,"
Escaped from his lips,
He slowly closed his eyes,
Went to sleep,
One last time.
She felt his hand,
Squeeze,
Then,
Ceased,
As his life passed.
She cried,
"Father, please don't go..."
"I will never truly go away from you..." she heard his voice say from a different place,
A different time.
