MAX

I know you are not my cat,

and I am not your person.

This exonerates us from familial responsibility.

So, we can be friends.

I have never fed you a morsel,

no treat has passed from my hand to your mouth.

I have never filled your bowl,

I don’t even know where it is.

When I happen by you know my voice,

and greet me with your world-wise meow,

this fills me with joy.

We share this interaction

and we are both the better for it.

Someday you will not come when I call.

I will be sad, but I will always know that, for what it is worth,

we loved each other.
