Lying Around the House

A Couple of Short Spoken Word Poems About Everyday Objects in the Household

1) Headphones.

Headphones are meant to shut things out;

the people, the surroundings, even yourself.

When I put them in,

it is a clear sign of "Do Not Disturb."

Yet

you disturb me anyways,

to get my attention.

Most of the time

I do not mind.

I just left them in my ears from previous usage.

You can disturb me then.

But,

when I am clearly avoiding you

on purpose,

just let me go.

I guess headphones are just a universal way of people growing apart.

It is suppose to be a time of personal alone'ness, but are you really focusing on your inner thoughts speaking?

Or,

do you shut them out too...

2) Early Hibernation.

What is happening outside?

Summer has become Fall

Winter is Spring

Fall is Summer

and, Spring is Winter.

My body cannot tell the difference anymore.

We are in late Summer

yet, it is cold.

I am cold.

I can feel early slumber setting in.

My eyes grow heavy. My arms go limp.

I should not be this tired but natural occurrences are ticking my

biological clock.

It is as if my body has "fallen back" before the time changed.

What is happening inside?

3) The Computer.

Mobile internet.

The world wide web at just a click of a key.

An entire population

contained

in a small digital box.

Are we imprisoning ourselves?

Our freedom is slowly draining away from us

the more we "log in".

We are so connected and yet so distant.

So social and yet so closed-off.

We are just attractions in this Ethernet Zoo

bouncing around from web-page to web-page like the next exhibit.

We offer ourselves;

our talents;

our children;

our inner beings;

to be put on display for the enjoyment of others.

We are a nation of self-restriction.
