Love Is Not to Hurt

We Are Alive

When we met, how foolish was

I to believe in all the lies.

Under a spell, I fell.

Trusted you, thought I

Was safe. If I only knew.

Broken, battered, unworthy

Disgrace, I believed to be

True, bruises, burns, fear

You won, I became your prisoner

Raped, beating, being told

You're no good.

Children born, fear is stronger

Now, my children I will

See free. Escaped from you

Us three made it out alive.

The nightmares continue

You won again, you became our

Monster under the bed, in the

Closet. We're free physically

Mentally we're still your prisoner

People say abuse can't do

That to you. Have they

Seen a child's grave,

Mother's grace?

We were lucky, we got away

With our lives, just not

Our minds.
