Lost Love

A Poem (in Which My Heart Breaks Every Time Read It Over)

She loved the way the waves crashed against the sandy shore

I saw it as the gentle tide after, for what she had loved most about it

She loved the way it imaged her pleasure

I thought she loved the way it made chaos turn to heavenly peace

but she loved the way you made her chaotic

like the waves she once loved to watch crash against the once smooth sand

I kept her tide low and her sand layer smooth

not a ripple to be seen

but she loved the way you made her break into a million grains of sand

by a simple touch of your hand

she looked at me with eyes of the chaotic seas

& all I saw was gentleness & beauty

In the creases of her smile, I saw the waves of the ocean forming gigantic crescents

& all I wanted to do was ride them

I outlined and traced all the crescents of the waves I found within the layers of her body

making sure never to disrupt the smooth layer of sand she presented

as I continued riding the waves of her creased edges of that wavy smile

the waves one day threw me to the sandy shore below

that I had kept so smooth

but when I reached the bottom

face to face with the sand

it had already been disrupted

but how?

the waves of her smile became a low tide when she realized what I had found

the once smooth layer of sand I had tried to keep so smooth had been disrupted all the way to shore

by another riding the same waves and managing to fall into the abyss of the dark sea floor that lay below

I finally understood how the waves of the sea

resembled how my keeping of her sandy layer smooth

would never be enough to make her want to stay

to continue riding the waves that my body ached for her to ride to shore

for every day to come

until I was no more

but she took her board in hand

& left my smooth sandy shore

a mess

the sea never looked so empty

& chaotic
