Tall gazes at
towering trees
staring
in reverence
at a novice squirrel
teething an acorn,
she gazes on
small playful bruises on
scraped knees
tresses of auburn
holding hidden memories
etched in her brain
and like clockwork,
it never ceased,
working
like a turbine,
she gazes on
there he lies
trapped forever in her manicured hands
only a cookie-cutter clipping
of his boyish smile remains,
the last living legacy
of trivial, adolescent games
somewhere in America
there is a little girl
turning page after page in
a scribbled out coloring book
colorful cartoons
gracing the television screen
unknown
to the fact of that
in which childhood ends
and adulthood begins,
yet still, she gazes on
i want to be
a naïve child again
i go back
i’ll get it right
this time
nevertheless,
i was afraid
she gazes on
this little Mozart
is condemned.
