Letting Go

A Goodbye

The cost of not being chosen,

Is not the loss of one who never knew —

What they were losing

while frozen by indecision,

But exercising precision

In choosing someone who wasn't you.

What is a girl to do?

Implore her heart to move on.

Soothe herself once again

And explore the world she started

To forget, while letting herself

Bend to accept unfairness.

Her awareness that she was,

In fact, interfering with the joy

Of another, caused her to fight.

Who knows what is right when

The end always leaves her

Alone to grieve what couldn't be,

Left her jilted love searing

As she was burned

and smothered

By guilt.

Alas, again, it wasn't her turn.

All over a tall boy whose fading

made her feel small.

Is there really a price paid at all?

Time wasted in waiting

While he never fully tasted

What he was asking to walk away.

Basking in his status quo.

He balked, but chose to hide.

If he wasn't going to try,

Should have had the courage

to honestly chase

what he claimed to desire,

not encourage her to keep trying

so not to face letting her go.

Now she cries, but she will heal.

At least she isn't afraid to feel.

To be real.

Lesson learned.

There is always loss with goodbye.

Don't give your heart to anyone who doesn't try.
